Re: detroit areas to avoid. 14 years ago. Ann Arbor and Jackson may be smaller but they also have areas to avoid. Detroit's main tourist areas ( Greektown and Stadium District) are fine. Neither Jackson or Ann Arbor offer a downtown like Detroit's although Ann Arbor's is fairly unique. You might consider staying in a suburb of Detroit such ....
